POSITION:  Legal Advocate

 ACCOUNTABILITY:  Responsible to Legal Advocacy Manager (Washington)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist clients in filing Protection From Abuse petitions, accompanying them to Southwestern PA Legal Services and advocating for them at hearings.
  • Counsel Legal Advocacy Office clients in legal options and expectations.  Support and assist clients in all aspects of the criminal justice system, accompanying them to hearings as requested.
  • Accompany clients to law enforcement agencies and advocate on their behalf in an ongoing manner as requested.
  • Assist clients as requested with completion of Victim Compensation claims.
  • Keep up-to-date with prevailing laws, statutes, and local procedures pertaining to domestic violence victims.
  • Responsible for gathering/organizing information and keeping electronic records, submitting all data and reports in a timely manner as directed.
  • Develop/maintain good working relationships with and assist in trainings to legal/law enforcement systems.  Participate in LAP efforts.
  • Participate in advocacy activities on behalf of battered women on a local, state and national level to assure increased levels of awareness of domestic violence issues by the public and policy makers.
  • Provide referrals and accompaniment to appropriate systems and agencies.
  • Supervise and train volunteers as directed.
  • Assist in training to all staff and volunteers.
  • Report child abuse as mandated by law; ensure that volunteers understand that they are mandated reporters and required to report child abuse as directed by the requisite process.
  • Maintain facility, staff, volunteer, and client confidentiality at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A. or B.S. with related significant work experience.
  • Sensitivity to interpersonal violence issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of community resources.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to make decisions and work in crisis situations.
  • Flexibility, a sense of humor, and ability to deal with daily crises.
  • Exude positive image of agency in the community.
  • Possess PA driver’s license, insurance, and reliable vehicle.
  • Hold/maintain PA Criminal Record Clearance, PA Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Clearance.

HOURS:  Part-time position, 12 hours/week

POSITION: Volunteer Outreach Coordinator

ACCOUNTABILITY:  Responsible to Prevention/Education Coordinator

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, and day-to-day operation of a coordinated and integrated volunteer/intern program covering Washington, Greene, and Fayette Counties.
  • Develop, schedule, facilitate/supervise trainings for volunteers, new staff, and interns that comply with the training standards as set forth by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence; arrange for and schedule speakers/trainers from relevant organizations.
  • Recruit and screen volunteers and interns through speaking presentations and advertising with an emphasis in Washington County.
  • Work with other departments to initially schedule, properly utilize, and retain volunteers, holding meetings and trainings as needed.
  • Assist direct service staff with volunteer coverage of sites as requested when unable to secure on their own.
  • Ensure documentation of ongoing volunteer training and appropriate volunteer information files for all three counties, with individual responsibility for volunteers in Washington County.
  • Recruit and manage service organization placements in Washington, Greene, and Fayette counties on an as needed basis.
  • Maintain direct and indirect service statistics for volunteers and supervise all required data collection of volunteers with an emphasis in Washington County.
  • Inform staff and volunteers of continuing education opportunities inside and outside the agency.
  • Manage coordination and staffing of informational tables and events utilizing volunteers.
  • Act as liaison amongst volunteers and between volunteers, staff, and management.
  • Present educational domestic violence programs to target groups within service area if necessary.
  • Provide domestic violence trainings to area systems and agencies if necessary.
  • Attend meetings/trainings relative to position as assigned.
  • Contribute to agency newsletter.
  • Serve on Domestic Violence Awareness Month committee.
  • Support and assist other agency sites as needed.
  • Supervise volunteers to assist with work load as needed.
  • Exhibit a primary prevention mindset as a means toward ending domestic violence.
  • Maintain facility, staff, volunteer, and client confidentiality at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A. or B.S. in Education or Communication and/or experience in public speaking/teaching.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage people and implement programs.
  • Ability to be flexible and proactive.
  • Sensitivity to interpersonal violence issues.
  • Have current Pennsylvania driver’s license, insurance, and reliable vehicle.
  • Hold/maintain PA Criminal Record Clearance, PA Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Clearance.

HOURS:  Part-time position (28 hours/week), with flexibility in scheduling.
